I have decided not to buy the Yamaha SCR950 I posted about on a whim last night. I realized today it’d be a lateral move, at best, and I’d need to spend money on it that I’d rather spend on my Fiero project. So the KLR is just getting paid off rather than traded in. No new #content from me....

I’ve always liked the look of those and attempted to talk a few folks into buying one.  A couple dealers have them for $4k + fees nearby.

Yeah the one I wanted was 5k even. Which, if I was looking for my second bike after beating on some ratty ninja or an old dual sport, I’d totally do. This is a perfect “first new bike” if you transition from a beater to something newer and better. Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to take advantage of the offer, I think I’d just end up missing my KLR and just wishing I’d saved the cash for my other projects.

I dont like either.

I would have kept the KLR between the two. at least thats useful.

time for a VFR.

VFR is probably on hold if the trophy 1200 situation comes out as a success. I think I want a stripped down roadster type bike with some classic/cafe style elements . A triumph street twin would be an ideal candidate or an XSR700.

you see, I would accuse you of making quesitonable bike choices, but I almost came home with SV #10 sunday, so I have to keep my trap shut for a little bit.

Also the KLR is a great bike, you’re just deluded into thinking you wouldn’t enjoy it since it’s the regula r cab, l ong bed, stick shift 80s pickup of bikes. It’s a riot. Every ride becomes an excuse to try and emulate the dukes of hazzard while also having a really cushy seat under your ass and you get better gas mileage than a prius.

......On a scale of “after-work meetup” to “St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago”, how many drinks did you have that led you to that decision?

nah, I just dont like carbs and prefer my bikes to be designed this side of the turn of the 21st century.

none! it was stupid cheap (like...$1 per CC cheap) and it just needed a carb clean. someone beat me to it though .

Meh, I just tend to prefer bikes that work, even without oil or if you happen to abuse them. But I can see why you feel that way. You’d NEVER let something like that happen, right? :P

Kinja'd!!!

(sorry, sorry, it just worked out with your last post that I can point out that while your daytona could’ve been hurt, a KLR wouldn’t have noticed)

for some reason i cant reply to the last one...weird.

anyways: Yea, daytona would have been hurt. but Daytona also ...you know, actually makes power?

like I said, KLR has its place in the world. SCR doesnt. Id take a KLR over a SCR aaannnnyyyyy day of the week.

While the daytona makes power, the KLR makes hitpoints.

Granted, I still like the SCR for what it is.....it’s just that the KLR is already a scrambler at heart - a big stupid, simple street bike, lifted up on crude suspension and bolted together really damn well. And the SCR just looks cool.

The SCR950 is just... such a mediocre bike. Shit ground clearance, mediocre power. Expensive. Put some knobbies on a XSR900 if you want a retro bike.

It’s not expensive. Especially compared to an XSR. Either 700 or 900. New ones can be had for 5 grand or less. It’s mediocre in the way that all low displacement cruisers are mediocre. It’s a cool city bike thats way better than a “big” scooter for similar prices.

Granted, it is essentially an appearance pack on a yamaha bolt so if you don’t want a harley sportster made by yamaha, it isn’t for you.

Yeah it’s a cruiser without any of the advantages of a cruiser (low CG and seat height, comfort) and none of the advantages of a city beater (light, fantastic fuel economy). The biggest praise I can find is that it’s so shitty it’s endearing.

I can see that, this bike is definitely not a replacement for a KLR.

i have a sad face now, that my SCR is so unloved here on Oppo. 2 wheelsstillgood. i’m still looking for the one true motorcycle that does everything well, and looks like it was designed by the hand of some godlike thingy.

I’ve heard really good things about the tenere and V-strom 1000s. But they’re ugly as sin. Same with the R1200GS.

Maybe the ducati desert sled would be a better compromise?
